The Great Taco Trek of 2019

On Thursday, July 18th 2019, I attempted to eat 10 tacos at 4 different taco trucks around the city within the span of a few hours. Did I eat 10? Not even close. Did I eat some of the best tacos I’ve ever eaten in my life? You know it!

My first stop was LA Birria. This place is just set up on some tables outside of a Laundromat on W. Adams and Crenshaw. That cup? That’s birria juice that you dip the tacos in. Like a French Dip, but for Tacos!

The Spider Taco has a crispy layer of cheese that is grilled right on the griddle and then filled with birria. Birria is usually made from goat or mutton and it’s fucking delicious.

Next stop was Sonoratown! Sonoratown was featured on NETFLIX recently so the line is out the freakin’ door. They make their own flour tortillas and have wood fired carne asada that is so good it should be illegal.

Third Stop was Tacos 1986 in DTLA. I’ve seen these guys at Smorgasburg on Sundays so I was excited to see what they were all about at their Brick + Mortar. I thought, oh these are just gonna be tacos…NO THEY ARE NOT JUST TACOS. 1986 has the crispiest and juiciest pastor I have ever eaten. I got one pastor on a flour tortilla (off menu) and one mushroom on their signature homemade corn tortillas. HOLY HELL. Why would anyone eat at Taco Bell?

Last stop was Tacos Los Poblanos in South Central because my stomach was saying, “Katie what are you doing to me?!” I was going to go to Leo’s for some more pastor, but I wanted to live. This was more asada, but completely different flavor than Sonoratown.

I loved the homemade guac and corn tortillas and that we were outside of a Tire Shop.

I can’t wait until my next TACO TREK! Where should I go next?!
